MS-DOS 7.1 (not to be confused with the MS-DOS 7.1 built into older versions of Windows) is a bootleg of MS-DOS 7.1 (more so a standalone version with enhancements), which was created by China DOS Union. It released in 2004, and was added to the archive on November 28, 2022. It is one of the most well known MS-DOS bootlegs.
Description
MS-DOS 7.1 is a version of MS-DOS made by Microsoft in 1997. This version of DOS was never officially released as a standalone version, and was instead used in Windows 95 OSR 2 and Windows 98. As such, this bootleg attempts to make MS-DOS 7.1 easier to install and utilize as a standalone OS without having to use Windows 9x.
The OS itself is very flexible and has three installation types:
- Full, which includes several utilities
- DOS commands only, which only includes a basic install of DOS
- And Minimal, which only contains the absolute essentials.
You can also optionally install add-ons which will add several common DOS tools, as well as enable a Windows 9x-esque boot screen.
Other than that, most of the features are stock DOS.
Changes from MS-DOS 7.1 (independent)
- All mentions of Windows 98 (the version this bootleg takes DOS from) have been replaced with "MS-DOS 7.1"
- The kernel (IO.SYS) has been patched to allow Windows 3.x to run properly in both standard and enhanced modes on this version of DOS
