Not to be confused with the real Windows 1.0 Premiere Edition.

Windows Premiere Edition is a bootleg of Windows 1.01, which was created by betaguy224. It released in 2008, and was added to the archive on December 9, 2021. The OS basically pretends to be the Windows Premiere Edition, which at the time of its release, was unleaked and extremely sought after.

Description

This bootleg is an infamous fake build claiming to be Windows Premiere Edition. It was circulated around the internet for many years, first appearing on BetaArchive's FTP after being uploaded by betaguy224 in 2008.

Despite betaguy224's insistence that it was real, several things pointed towards it being fraudulent:

  • The memory management system was identical to 1.01, despite Microsoft's claims that they'd rewritten the memory management between Premiere Edition and Windows 1.01.
  • The inclusion of a file named WRITE.DAT, which was known not to exist in Premiere Edition. The file was later removed.
  • betaguy224 himself was infamous in the beta community for uploading fake build screenshots.

Despite the staggering evidence against it, many people thought it was real, and it remained available on BetaArchive's FTP until August 2013. A former Microsoft intern named Alias would finally dump the real OS on November 29, 2014.

Changes from Windows 1.01

Minor changes

  • The about box has been changed to say "Premiere Edition".

Changes in pre-desktop procedures

  • The bootscreen has been changed to say "Windows Premiere Edition".

Notes

Bootleg quirks

  • WRITE.EXE and its associated files have been removed from the distribution, to mimick Windows Premiere Edition. But unfortunately for the author, they missed a spot - the file WRITE.DAT still existed, which was a file known not to exist in the actual Premiere Edition.
