WinBorg XP December 2009 is a bootleg Windows XP SP3 distribution, created as part of the WinBorgXP series by SOPORIFIC. It released on December 13, 2009, and was added to the archive on August 9, 2024.

Description

The bootleg is a modified Windows XP SP3 ISO. It comes with many themes and wallpapers, and a WPI with a large software library.

It is integrated with DriverPacks (if you choose it in the boot menu) and Windows XP Post-SP3 Update Pack (QFE) 1.1.5 20091208, and registry tweaks and addons as well if you chose it in the boot menu.

The first boot procedures consist of 4 main batch scripts: boot01.cmd, 1stStart.bat, 2ndStart.bat and cleanup2.cmd. boot01.cmd will vary depending on which version you chose in the boot selector, as well as the other scripts the script will call. For example, if you installed WinBorgXP, it will do the following:

• Copy 1stStart.cmd to the All Users' Startup folder (therefore priming the next procedure)
• Play the Clubbed to Death song (you may hear it during the login section, the script starts pretty early therefore there isn't a startup sound defined)
• Apply essential registry tweaks script
• Call the SetTheme_Winborg batch script (the regular SetTheme script is practically identical)
  • This just sets the wallpaper to %Windir%\Web\Wallpaper\312.jpg.
  • There is SetTheme_Vanilla, which sets the wallpaper to NewBliss.jpg.
• Apply a registry script which renames My Computer to "The Collective"
  • The registry script additionally fixes a bug in Kels' Uber Addon Pack, by clearing the default entries of the Copy To and Move To context menu handlers.
• Remove TrueTransparency from the HKCU startup list
• Then, call the _updates.cmd batch script and install system goodies
  • Despite none of the preceding hotfixes being included in the hotfixes folder, the former script is coded to install from that folder: Root Certificates Update, KB909520-v1.000, KB961118, KB971513, KB973687, KB976098-v2, KB971314, KB968816, KB890830-v2.14, KB973540, KB935957, KB936782, KB945381, IE 8, CAPICOM-KB931906-v2102, and KB963027.
  • The latter goodies are in two folders: setup1, and setup2. The former includes:
    • Lightspeed! 8.x
    • Starting Fonts (58 fonts, not including system fonts)
  • And the latter has nothing.
• Call cleanup1.cmd version 2.2 December 2009, and exit.
  • The cleanup script will delete the Windows\WPI directory, and clean up after DriverPacks Finisher by deleting its leftover folders and files.

The entirety of the first boot procedures (including the scripts called by the script) are logged in BorgLog.log at %systemroot%. There also exist a CD-ROM check and sleep commands of varying intervals, where appropriate. There is commented out code for detecting a WPI. boot01.cmd is the only main script with variants, all of the other main scripts don't have them.

Once the first procedure is concluded, the system will reboot into the next one - 1stStart.bat (versioned 2.3 in a comment):

• Define variables to common system/user locations
• Kill TrueTransparency.exe (considered an unwanted startup app)
• Delete unwanted shortcuts (Windows Media Player in both Desktops)
• If Firefox exists, make program groups and desktop shortcuts for it
• Set 2ndStart.bat to run on next startup
• Prime the last major procedure (cleanup2.cmd) (which will also run on next startup)
• Set screen resolution (SetMyRes.cmd)
  • Set the display to 1024x768x32. If there is a WideScreen.txt file in the system drive, try setting the display to 1280x800, then 1440x900, then 1680x1050, and then 1920x1200.
• Fix Windows Time
  • This just restarts the W32 Time service, and reregisters W32 Time.
• Run a timed 5-minute shutdown command
• Reset its own attributes, print its last log, and nuke itself

Once the second procedure is concluded, the system will reboot into the next 2 ones (2ndStart.bat and cleanup2.cmd), which run simultaneously. Starting with 2ndStart.bat:

• Define variables once again
• Call SetMyRes.cmd again
• Open 2 text files: finished_install.txt and Audio_issues.txt, which both contain instructions relating to their names.
• Start "User Settings", which is a user information configuration program
• Play "Mansion World"
• Execute 5 quick cleanup commands, deleting mainly miscellaneous files and the Temp directories
• Prepare pistol, write suicide note to its parents and commit suicide. Exit to Heaven, soon after.

And finally, cleanup2.cmd (version 2.3, December 2009):

• Define the variables once more
• Move most of the default shortcuts in both All Users' and the current user's All Programs to a "Windows" programs group
• Delete unwated (sic) shortcuts, and clean up the Quick Launch bar
• Delete the Navigation Start and Windows XP Start sound effect, thus getting rid of the click sound when you open folders
• Delete the Windows Media Player shortcut from the Desktop
• Delete 3rd-party program groups and shortcuts
• Run the Re-Order Directories program, which recreates the MenuOrder registry key and makes it read-only for everyone
• Finally, delete the BorgLog files and all .ins files on the system drive (not to be confused with the one in the system root)

As for boot01.cmd's variants, the "Standard" variant no longer applies the make_borg.reg registry script, and runs the regular SetTheme.cmd script instead of the WinBorg one. It is run after Kill_Autoruns.reg instead of before. The "Original" variant (which is based on the "Standard" script) doesn't apply the essential registry tweaks anymore and runs the SetTheme_Vanilla.cmd script.

It comes with its own boot selector. Through it, you can access:

• Install Operating System
  • Windows XP Professional SP3 without any tweaks or addons (Vanilla/Original)
  • Windows XP Professional SP3 with tweaks and addons (Standard)
  • WinBorg XP Professional SP3 with tweaks and addons (WinBorg)
  • You can install any of them with either the standard Windows mass-storage drivers or the latest mass-storage drivers provided by DriverPacks.

It is unattended and preactivated.

The ISO was made using nLite 1.4.9.1 on Windows XP SP3, the autorun was made with AutoPlay Media Studio 7.5.1000.0, and the boot selectors used were CD Shell 2.1, and EasyBoot 5.1 for the Utilities section of the boot selector. The autorun for "Winborg" in the z-OS directory of the CD (not the same as the CD root!) was made with Advanced CD Launcher. The OOBE video for WinBorgXP was encoded 2009-05-22 18:38:25 UTC.

Bootleg quirks

• Several included themes are broken in this bootleg:
  • LastXP is supposed to be at VistaXPColor\VistaXPColor.msstyles, which does not exist.
  • LE5's visual style path goes to LastXPLE5\LE.msstyles, but it should actually go to LE5\LE5.msstyles. Additionally, the wallpaper it tries to access (Wallpaper.bmp) doesn't exist.
  • Nexus's visual style path goes to Stylus Nexus\Nexus.msstyles, when it should go to Nexus\Nexus.msstyles.
  • WinBorgXP.Darkbar's visual style path goes to DarkWall\DarkWall.msstyles, which doesn't exist. Its wallpaper path goes to Web\Wallpaper\WinBorgXP.bmp, which also doesn't exist.
  • WinBorgXP.Feather uses a different color scheme (Green) from its origin theme (Purple).
  • WinBorgXP.Night's visual style path goes to Aero UI (Night)\Aero UI (Night).msstyles, which doesn't exist. Its wallpaper path goes to Web\Wallpaper\energybliss.jpg, which doesn't exist either.
