Windos 7 is a bootleg Windows XP SP3 edition, which was created by CHOCOLATEMAN (yeah, hard to believe, I know), and one of his real life friends which went by the persona "Inspector Gadget" on CollabVM.

It released on August 19, 2016, after they decided one day to make their own Windows XP bootleg to poke fun at them, after seeing Gold Windows XP 2016 by Computer Worm Corporation, that just became popular around the time they made this mod.

They even made up a fake story to go along with the bootleg - they claimed they supposedly found the bootleg in a thrift store (later retconned to finding it on archive.org), and that it came out on September 21, 2012 (which it did not, they had merely edited the file dates on the CD to hide the true date. The real date is visible in the ISO creation date.)

This bootleg may possibly be one of the first ever "ironic" bootlegs, predating even mods like Windows CTAC.

It was added to the archive on November 30, 2022.

Description

The bootleg is a modified Windows XP SP3 ISO. It styles the OS to an intentionally bad looking Windows 7 style, as a parody of Windows bootlegs. There have been many minor changes and hidden easter eggs integrated into the OS, to fit the theme of the wonderful ironic nature of this bootleg. The autorun, although stock, has had its graphics replaced and strings changed.

The ISO was made using nLite.

Changes from Windows XP SP3

Minor changes

  • The Classic Start menu's banner is changed to a rainbow.

Changes in pre-desktop procedures

  • The OOBE music has been replaced with a techno song from the Newgrounds Audio Portal (Eon - Universe City).

Look and feel

  • New default wallpaper. The Bliss wallpaper has been replaced with the Windows 7 wallpaper, albeit without the Windows logo. The wallpaper seems to be taken from a free wallpaper website.

Notes

Bootleg quirks

  • The Start button has its text removed, to poorly mimic Windows 7, to much humorous effect.
  • The misspelled name, "Windos 7", was originally an actual error but the creators kept it in because they found it too funny to correct it.
  • Most mentions of Windows XP has been replaced with Windows 7, sometimes the misspelled variant "Windos 7".
  • Some of the drivers have also been modified, which brings up warnings during the Setup.

Cut/unused/hidden content

  • One of the strings in the Shutdown Event Tracker's dialogs is changed to a particularly funny message - quote, "The computer got very poorly and decided to end it's own suffering."
  • msgina.dll string #1505 is set to "Wrong password !!!!".
  • The Classic Start menu banner was originally going to have text on it saying "WINDOWS 7" in a really funny-looking font, but it was never included. The banner was done by his friend, Gadget, by the way.
  • The autorun is supposed to have a custom logo, but due to another graphic also containing the logo being loaded in before it does, it is never shown.
  • The Notepad icon has been changed to a low resolution Windows 7 Notepad icon. "Word Wrap" in Format now says "Word Wrapper".
  • Task Manager's title is changed to "Silver Windows 7 Task Manager".

CD contents and other info

  • The README.HTM from the original Windows XP has also had all mentions of Windows XP replaced with Windows 7, however the logo at the top of the webpage has also been changed to a low-quality stretched Windows 7 logo.
  • The CD label is set to "WIN_7".
